Hi all.
I was just wondering why my favourite source of free software has been overloaded over the past few days. I'm talking about the FTP server of mirror.switch.ch[1]. It seems I cannot login because too many anonymous users are already logged in.
Is it some attack or maintenance? Anybody know something?

[1] I know http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp does work OK but downloading a couple of files is so much easier when you can use a decent FTP client.

AFAIK the 2nd national sourceforge-mirror (puzzle) is at the moment down (disk-crash) and this may lead to a higher load on sunsite-mirror?

I've seen the same problem; it seems to be the usual overload due to all those Bebbian users. (To every one of them: Please use ftp.ch.bebbian.org if you are looking for something to put into your /etc/apt/sources.list.)

No, the HTTP interface had the same problem.

Why would they need daily updates when the whole distribution is a living software museum? Anyway, there is also bebbian.ethz.ch (to put it in your words =:O)

Never noticed yet. Though, I'm now downloading Fedora Core 5 from ftp.solnet.ch. Works great, thank you guys.

rubi@malfoy:~$ host ftp.ch.debian.org ftp.ch.debian.org is an alias for debian.ethz.ch. debian.ethz.ch is an alias for kaerpf.ethz.ch. kaerpf.ethz.ch has address 129.132.86.196

As long as mirror.switch.ch is (ab)used for several speed tests for cable and DSL customers, the server will be DDOSed. Thanks to Swiss- and Cablecom.

To have such friends removes the requirement on enemies... (Tech speak version I'd say)

Hi Venty
As a Linux Guru you should know that today, Fedora Core 5 came out. Maybe it's because of this?
;-)
Greetings

I doubt that this has had such a big impact on that server's performance. Even more since it is swamped from last sunday until now. But hey, I have FC5 here now. Just finished burning the CDs.

Most likely the solar radiation caused an increased energy load on the time flow machine, which then created a tunnel back to the last weekend, thereby transporting the current release of Fedora Core back to that day. This was noticed by some people, who consecutively started to download like hell, thinking that this was where the release came from.

Hi, Yes, this is very possible; after looking at the transfer statistics Fedora is first by number of hits (600'000) and kb/s (51'000).
The average traffic load is around 430 Mbits/s. I don't know if we can expect more from this kind of hardware; a sun fire V440 (4xCPU). Don't use mirror for throughput tests, the results aren't reliable. The server is well tuned, quite fast, sometime busy, but still gratis!

The Cassini interfaces, if they are well tuned, can deliver easily gigabit performance, if your storage and application is fast enough.
