Cheap Acer netbooks at Migros

Migros is selling a cheap netbook for CHF 222.- http://goo.gl/1tZ5C Acer Aspire One AOD 255E-13DQws 1024x600 screen, 1GB RAM, 250GB disk 6-cell battery (!) It's a perfect device for remotely-controlled network tests, like packet capture or any telnet/snmp/SIP/perlscript testing scenarios that you like. Ubuntu runs immediately with full hardware support. CentOS 5 would not run: "atl1c" NIC driver is missing, so those pre-configured Asterisk boxes won't run. Windows, of course, gets thrown away immediately :) Usually you get a 3-cell battery in a 300-franks notebook, but this one is coming with a decent 6-cell one. It's enough to watch movies for 4 hours in a row. 1024x600 screen is too smal for any real work, but quite good for Internet browsing and perfect for movies. RAM is easy to upgrade to 2GB, but watch out the RAM clocking. As far as I recall, CL9 works, and others do not. The easiest way to check is to open the box and see what's inside. cheers, stan

My Experience is that notebooks are not realy useful for packet sniffing...as more an more Gibabit is common and laptops are no a recommended option to measure data transmission. Especialy when capture filters will be used... Also the available disc space is very limited... I prefer older server infrastructure, that is able to run captures from several points with 2-4 or more NIC's in a ringbuffer configuration... Cheers Martin

Heya Swinogers, This is not directly related to networking, but behind those nice routers and switches of yours, some people may have servers connected there, a guy told me. So, as mentioned in my subject, I got some old servers here that I'm trying to sell : I've got about 10 DL380G4 with drives, single or dual CPU, from 2.8 to 3.4 Ghz, 2 to 6 Gb of ram. I also have a pair of DL360 G4. Drives are SCSI320, I don't think I've got anything higher than 76Gb there. My idea would be to sell the lot in one shot, however I'm open to any suggestions. Obviously, I'm trying not to throw them out, as they have been running in clean environment since their first startup, they could be useful. A good compromise if you need a server with a full set of spare parts ;) Current location of those machines is Geneva. Anyway, just contact me off-list for any questions. your right i allready was having such cases in the past, most sirea leone or romania calls, but the abuser was originating from russia in most cases seldom from korea. The scanner was allways one machine which doing bruteforce but since a few weeks this changed, only a few request which do not trigger the detection logic of such attacks from several hosts. Nothing harmfull at the moment .. but if it a bot network doing this whis thousands of drones .. how to detect and protect ? When the password of an account is cracked, why could not the same botnet be used to make calls ? That would be an horrorscenario of course I fear we going in to expect that very soon. hi all, more and more i getting sipscans from dynamic ips from most swiss dsl and cable provider the strange thing is they try at least twice .. and then stop a few seconds later in most cases come 2 request from another connection. is that some kind of trojan which is gone wild ? anyone has some idea ? Ich suche für einen Kunden eine Lösung, die sich auf einem Fahrzeug montieren lässt und mehr oder weniger unabhängigen Internetzugang von "irgendwo" zulässt (westliche Hemisphäre). The engineering school of Fribourg and some business partners (like Dreamlab and Objéctif Sécurité) have developed a set of tools to analyse the quality of the Swiss Internet. This project is called NetObservatory[1] and our third report[2] is out today. Have fun reading it. Hi @Manfredo/Daniele - Hmm..Already thought about perhaps switching to one of this routers. Is a 2921 really taking all (Full IPv4/IPv6 Features incl. all BGP, ASN 4-bytes) just with the regular IP Base = Part-No. CISCO2921/K9? What can we expect as maximum traffic for this configuration? @Andy/Michael - Would the SP not be sufficient. Or why should we use Advanced IP or Advanced Enterprise service? @Kurt - What are the hardware specification of your setup for you Quagga? Is Quagga able to do HSRP or something similar? How much bandwidth do you handle with that configuration? @All, is enabling of IPv6 taking that much memory, so 512 MB with two full feed and some SwissIX peering would be enough? Hi We want to go a step further with our infrastructure and start testing/implementing IPv6. Has anybody here a 7206VXR + NPE400 running and doing IPv6 / Full BGP / 4-byte ASN? If yes, which IOS Version and Package do you have installed. How much memory / flash do you have installed? We currently have “only” two upstreams and some SwissIX peering. As long as you don't need a lot of interfaces the 2921 with 1G RAM will do the job (151-1.T with IP-Base). Partial revision of VÜPF/OSCPT

Dear SwiNOGers, I just received an email from EJPD / DFJP which released a partial revision of the "Verordnung über die Überwachung des Post- und Fernmeldeverkehrs" / "Ordonnance sur la surveillance de la correspondance par poste et télécommunication" (VÜPF/OSCPT) today. (request for feedback alike, deadline for answers is 29 july 2011). This is not the update of the law! It is a revision of the regulation (probably to make the "IP Richtlinie / Directive IP" valid!). It really looks like a wish-list including fancy stuff like real-time Internet surveillance (Art. 24a), Instant messaging, VPN surveillance and so on, some articles even have "etc.." to make it virtually unlimited... !? ASUT, Swisscable and SwiNOG have received the documents and they will be available from the website of the EJPD/DFJP starting tomorrow. If you want them right now, I have packed them into a ZIP on the SwiNOG site. http://www.swinog.ch/files/vupf08062011.zip SwiNOG is not representing the ISPs, we all know that and we're running around this problem for a while now. "SwiNOG Organisation" can, however, organise stuff ;-) That is why I propose to organise a meeting (not an event, a meeting) with representatives of all interested ISPs and hosters. The temporary agenda of the meeting is in two parts. First we will discuss how to answer this "request for feedback" and in the second part we will discuss how/why/if the ISPs should be represented (basically, a lobby) and hopefully get a real answer to the forever question. I have invited the ASUT to participate to our meeting but have no answer yet. Finecom has offered its meeting room in Biel/Bienne which is about in the middle of everyone. Topic #3: Peering ------------------ Everything about your peering experience. Why are you doing it? How are you doing it? Have you written any useful tools which others might find interesting? Topic #4: ISP BOF ----------------- "All things ISP". From Network/SLA Management (for or against it), abuse handling and log systems to data centre layout and planning (including power and cooling), everything that is interesting to you as an ISP can be presented or discussed within this topic. Language of Slides and Talks ============================ To appeal to an international audience we ask you to produce your slides in English, but the spoken language of the presentation itself can be either German or English. Submission Guidelines ===================== All submissions must have a strong technical bias and must not be solely promotional for your employer. Please remember that your presentations should be suitable for a target audience of technicians from varied backgrounds, working for companies whose sizes may vary considerably. To submit a proposal for a presentation, we request that you provide the following information as plain text or PDF format to <denog-pc(a)denog.de>: * the name of the presenter (and if applicable your affiliation) * a working email address * the name and number of the topic which will contain the presentation * the title of the presentation * its expected length (in minutes) * the preferred spoken language for the presentation * a short abstract of the presentation (not more than 200 words) We also welcome suggestions for specific presentations which you feel would be valuable to the DENOG community. Please be aware that your presentation will be published on the DENOG website after the event.

His main responsibilities will be infrastructure projects to extend our fiber optic backbone network and the support of our optical transmission systems.
