Hey all
A friend just told me that Cybernet told him there is a Switzerlandwide Internet Problem.
Does anybody know something?
Cheers

Internet Society Delegation to Attend World Conference on International
Telecommunications in Dubai, 3-14 December 2012
More than 50 members of the Internet Society global community will
participate
[Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland – 30 November 2012] – An
Internet Society delegation will attend the World Conference on
International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai, 3-14 December 2012.
WCIT is a global treaty conference hosted by the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) where 193 ITU Member States come together
to discuss and modify the International Telecommunications Regulations
(ITRs). Approximately 50 members of the Internet Society global
community will attend the meetings.
As a Sector Member of the ITU Telecommunication Standards and
Telecommunication Development Sectors, the Internet Society submitted a
statement to the ITU as part of the WCIT public consultation. The
statement can be found here:
http://www.internetsociety.org/doc/WCITSubmissionOctober2012.
The Internet Society remains hopeful that the ITU Member State
delegations to the WCIT will agree to a treaty that enhances rather than
restricts international telecommunications. The Internet Society and its
Board of Trustees believe that any revisions to the ITRs should:
* Reinforce Member States’ commitment to open, transparent, and
inclusive policy-making processes;
* Enshrine a commitment to open, voluntary international standards;
* Enable continued innovation;
* Emphasize policy approaches such as competition, liberalization, and
transparency;
* Be based on thorough technical and socio-economic analysis; and
* Retain the high-level nature of the ITRs.
The Internet Society delegation looks forward to having opportunities to
interact with Member State delegations during the course of the
Conference and to a successful outcome of the WCIT. For more information
on WCIT, visit http://internetsociety.org/wcit.

Does anyone know the Swiss delegate of the upcoming ITU conference in Dubai? It would be appropriate if the delegate of our democratic country actually has a known face and we all know how he/she is going to vote.
The topics in this conference are a real threat to the Internet we know and love (refer to the SwiNOG #25 slides of Arnold).
If you are not familiar yet with the topic, watch (and share) this website and video:

Silvan:
Well, you said you had the all SFP switch with the 2 gig uplinks completing the ring of 5 switches and having only 24 Fast Ethernet ports with SFP capability available....how were you intending to use these ports ? Why do you say your cpe devices are not appropriate? Also are the ring of switches all the same make/model? What are the 24 100mbit ports on that last switch NOT doing? Please bring some more details of your plan if you would. Are all switches running same config and IOS verson and feature set?
Regards,
Vinnie

We use the fully sfp model. The giga ports are taken with sfp cables for uplink. We run 100bas bx on the fa ports. But I have some special cases and I don't want regular cpe here.

Hi Silvan:
Hope you are doing well. It looks like there is only one model of these switches that supports SFP on the 100mbit ports. That model is ME 3400-24FS. It supports SFP on the 100mbit ports and on the 2 gbit uplink ports.
The other switch from this platform that has only 10/100mbit ports (ME 3400-24TS) only supports SFP on the 2 gigabit uplink ports.
The remainder of the switches in this series:
ME 3400G-12CS
ME 3400G-2CS
Both have 24 10/100/1000 Dual purpose ports that support SFP and RJ45. I hope this helps. Best Regards,

Dear SwiNOG,
I'd like to draw your attention to a survey we're conducting in context
of several research projects:
+----------------------- Call for Participation -----------------------+
Survey on network attack detection and mitigation
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
opened from 14.11.12 - 04.12.12
+--------------> http://www.dasec.h-da.de/survey/netsec <--------------+
Network-based attacks pose a strong threat to the Internet landscape and
academia is working towards different approaches on attack detection and
mitigation. Yet, a clear understanding of possibilities and issues in
commercial networks is missing. Hence, this survey aims at gaining
insight in real-world processes, structures and capabilities of IT
companies and the computer networks they run. This survey is conducted
in context of different publicly funded research projects of the da/sec
Biometrics and Internet Security research group [1], as well as work
done in the combined eco e.V. and DE-CIX competence group security.
Results of this survey shall frame future research and community
activities in the area of Internet security.
The survey targets at companies of all size and colour running an own
computer network. Questions within this survey address some
organizational aspects, as well as processes, techniques and tools you
may have employed in order to perform network attack detection and
mitigation. Filling the survey should not last longer than 5 - 10
minutes. Thus, this survey can ideally be answered during a short and
relaxing coffee/tea break ;-)
Thank you all for your help to advance Internet security research!
[1] http://www.dasec.h-da.de/
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
It would be nice if you would support our work by participating in this
survey.
If you may have any particular questions regarding this survey or our
work, please do not hesitate to contact me off-list.
Thanks and best regards

I've got an idea for a project for 1-3 talented young people. It will involve a lot of learning in system design, IP Telephony, and software design.
I can offer my time in mentoring and guiding, and also I'll provide some equipment as needed.
Details of the project are outlined here:
https://plus.google.com/112114512050260382816/posts/ZqCyG2HM9NR
Eventually I can find some financing for this development at a later stage, but that's not the primary goal.

Hey All
Quick question: do you allow/run routing protocols between your (isp-)
network and your customer?
If so: which protocols?
If not: what reasons do you tell the customer?
In particular I am interested to know about setups when they want to
announce the prefix/subnet you assigned them from your PA-space back to
you because they want to run redundant routers.
The setup would probably look like this:
Customer Subnet 10.0.0.0/27
/ \

[customer router a] - <routing protocol x> - [customer router b]

<routing protocol y> <routing protocol y>

[isp router a] - <routing protocol z> - [isp router b]

hi all,
I'm looking for an open-source tool for ISP service management. It should allow documenting of all the physical network (ideally, also the datacenter environment), and associate physical and logical network instances with customer services and their contracts.
I looked at several tools, but they all are designed for Enterprise IT tasks, and none of them deals with subscribers and contracts:
http://www.opendcim.org/http://www.i-doit.org/
The NOC project seems to be promising, I should probably invest more time in learning it:
http://kb.nocproject.org/display/SITE/NOC
Your feedback will be appreciated.
Commercial systems would also be OK, as long as they fit the requirements and have open API.
thanks,
stan
