Reading the comment on equipment going to Africa etc, let me share something with you:
Mukom Tamon from Afrinic was speaking at our IPv6 conference in Zurich this June. He was pleading that we stop shipping old equipment to developing countries. He said, I get no money to buy new stuff, because we have all this old equipment standing around for free. How should I ever be able to do IPv6....
:-)
Cheers Silvia

Hi Mihai,
... needless to mention that vendors often offer special trade-in prices for "old" equipment if a company is life-cycling their stuff.
some of the equipment gets refurbished and sold through brokers, some gets shreded to salvage some gold and I strongly believe that most of the equipment that was initially in mid-europe and ran there for 3 to 5 years gets a second life in eastern europe, africa or south america ;-)

Hi guys,
I am shooting an offtopic, wild question.. though I kind of guess what the answers might be. Where are the big companies recycling / throwing away their servers?
In my experience, many servers are given to staff who subsequently sell them off on Ricardo. Many others are recycled by the supplier, maybe sold again as refurbished etc.
Seems to be quite a good business in this regard from what you're saying :) I was always wondering where Swisscom/UPC/etc are throwing away their stuff as they have quite a lot of equipments.
