(Please forgive the non-technical mail, but mandatory data retention should be a highly relevant issue for most ISPs. While this is not exactly brand new, it hasn't shown up on the list so far:) "European Digital Rights" (EDRI) recently launched a petition against data retention, which you can sign to show your support (so far there are 22'500 signatures from all over europe). SIUG supports the campaign. EDRI launches petition against data retention =========================================================== European Digital Rights, together with the Dutch ISPs XS4ALL and Bit, launched an international petition today against mandatory data retention. The petition is aimed at the European Commission and the members of the European Parliament. EDRI argues that retention of telecommunication traffic data is an invasive tool that interferes with the private life of all 450 million people in the European Union. Secondly, the petition points out that data retention is illegal under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, because it is disproportionate. Thirdly, the petition explains that security gained from retention may be illusory, as traffic data may easily point to another user and finally, the means through which this policy is being pursued are illegitimate. In the next two months, EDRI hopes to collect an impressive amount of signatures from all over Europe, to convince Commission and Parliament that data retention is no solution against terrorism and crime. Supporters are kindly invited to help distribute information about this petition, by placing the banner on their sites or homepages and spread the news through mailinglists. The petition-initiative will be presented during the opening speech of the open-air hacker event What the Hack, Thursday 28 July. During and after the event, everybody is invited to contribute to the website by adding translations in many other languages and back-ground files. The petition script uses confirmed opt-in to verify every signature. This means everybody has to provide the organisers with a valid e-mail address to receive the confirmation. The e-mail address will not be used for any other purpose. Only the name and country of every signer will be published publicly on the website and presented to Commission and Parliament. The specific privacy policy for this campaign guarantees that personal data will only be used for this specific purpose and all personal data will be destroyed after presentation of the list. Du hast aber recht - hätten die Behörden den IRC Log ausgewertet, hätten Sie Datum, Zeit und IP Adresse gehabt. Anhand dieser Daten kann man die CLI herausfinden, die diese IP Adresse an besagtem Tag bezogen hat. Bei schweizer Anfragen der Polizei (achtung nicht UVEK, sondern einfach Polizei ohne richterl. Hi Sorry, this message is only in German. If you prefer english, yust answer in english. Ich erhielt kürzlich von Deutschen Polizisten ein Auskunftsbegehren (Per Mail übber die GL) über einen unseren Freemail user (Letze IP Adresse). Das vorgehen war äusserst unprofessionel welches mich stutzig machte. Es gieng um eine Suizidandrohung im IRC (Die betreiber des Servers machten Anzeige) Wo eine Person auch die E-Mail adresse angegeben hat. IMHO hätte die Polizei lediglich die IRC Logs verlangen müssen um die richtige Person sofort zu finden (Könnte ja sein, dass diese eine fremde addi angegeben hat). Good afternoon everyone, Due to some hardware and personel problems, we from the MPlayer team need a new server and hoster/houser for our main server on which both the MPlayer and ffmpeg projects are running. I'm asking here especialy for a hoster/houser, though a server would be nice too ;) Please be aware that if you consider helping us that you should have some bandwith reserves because of the large amount of traffic these two projects generate. Ie. it's not something for a small garage hoster. Also note, that because these two projects are non-profit projects, we do not have any founding to pay you for the traffic or hosting/housing. Sorry, only in german... --- Ciscos Kundenpasswörter sind weg Für Ciscos Image in Sicherheitsbelangen kommt es immer noch dicker: Nach der unglücklichen Rolle des Netzwerk-Spezialisten Cisco bei dem Vortrag zu Cisco-Schwachstellen vergangene Woche und einem kurz darauf veröffentlichten Heap-Overflow bei der Verarbeitung von IPv6-Paketen wurden nun offenbar die Zugangsdaten von Cisco-Kunden kompromittiert: Wer versucht, sich auf dem Webserver von Cisco für das Support-Management und Bestellungen anzumelden, erhält die Meldung: IMPORTANT NOTICE: * Cisco has determined that Cisco.com password protection has been compromised. Als Vorsichtsmaßnahme hat Cisco die Zugangspasswörter zurückgesetzt, wie ein Mitarbeiter der Cisco-Hotline auf Anfrage von heise Security bestätigte. Besonders prekär ist diese Situation, weil bei Cisco nicht etwa Hinz und Kunz Patches für Cisco-Geräte herunterladen darf: Wer seinen Router beispielsweise gegen die vergangenen Freitag gemeldete Schwachstelle in der Behandlung von IPv6-Paketen absichern will, braucht dazu in der Regel einen Zugang zu Ciscos Software-Distributions-Center. Wann der reguläre Betrieb wieder aufgenommen werden kann, konnte der Mitarbeiter nicht sagen, auch eine offizielle Stellungnahme von Cisco zu den Vorgängen steht noch aus. The different is with analog Telephone Line you pay every Minute, if you are in the Internet... This you can have better on control. But The traffic. I think is not very easy... I make now a test at home... I have installed a counter on my PC and I'm looking, how mach of traffic the computer makes, without me... You must look Antivirus make every month min. 5-10 mb traffic. Windows Updates.. horror... En fact the Limit is Fr. 59.-- for the traffic. I think the most costumer are paying the Limit (total 69.--). For 150/50 is this verry expensive... For ADSL i think is the best way a flatrate... But I write tomorrow mornig what kind of trafic my computer is making... without makeing sometings. hi all last time the weather was not good ;-( i hope that this time we will have a fantastic weather and can enjoy the next tryout of our BBQ event. we go again for this BBQ event Oerlikerpark (near Center Eleven / Zurich Oerlikon). Link for registration http://swinog.mrmouse.ch/ please read the whole e-mail - there are some important informations :) when is it? ------------ 8th of august at around 18.30 - until.. well..open end ;) Registration deadline: 08.08.2005 12:00:00 ok, the registration deadline is kind of obsolete. anyone who wants to come just comes. we have enough space ,-) (but for the restaurant in case of bad weather it's quite important) what to food / drink? ----------------------- quite simple: what you bring with you is what you can eat and drink. some ppl are sponsoring some things, but don't rely on that. we will have some grills and some place to seat. i will sponsor some charcoal and bring again some one-way-usable-trow-away grills. and for sure i'll bring the little ventilator ;-) (thanks to roman ;-)) i heard that some guys wants to sponsor some beer ;-) roger will bring a tent... so, if you register and you want to contribute something for others please note it to the "COMMENTS" field when registering. this is very helpful for others to know, that to bring ;-) this could be: - beer - some hot sauces (venty?) - chips & snacks - good mood - bread - desserts - salads - etc.. where is it? ------------- http://www.gis.zh.ch/gb4/zvv/zvv.asp?zvv=ja&hst=0103789 it's in the 'Oerlikerpark' near Center Eleven / Zurich Oerlikon. with the bus 64 or 75 from bahnhof oerlikon until 'Bollingerweg'. or you come with the bus number 80 until 'Birchstrasse' and then walk behind the credit suisse building. ith the car you might park in the Parkhaus Octavo (in the CS building) or in he near of the center eleven (coop; 5min away and has open until 20.00). see pictures on http://gallery.glogger.ch/swinogbe16 problems (!!!): --------------- there is NO public toilet in the near. so please consider this before leaving for the BE ,-) there might be some toilets walking some minutes around ;-) if there is (very) bad weather: -------------------------------- if the weather is very bad on that date we would move to the 'Johanniter' in the 'Döfli'. i' make an email until 12:00 about the change. (ow..is that slow -,)) but is it really cheaper? let's calculate a little bit: 20MB costs the user at least 10.- per month (that he has to switch his telephone to sunrise is another thing). a 56k modem reaches about 7kb/sec. so 20Mb takes about 48 Minutes to download. 1 hour by phone costs something CHF 2.80. i know, its a little bit comparing apples with pears... but at the end: - the user can download faster (ok, it takes hime 16 minutes...) - pays around 10x more ... the user should enjoy a good coffee during that download - which he can of course afford because he saved some money ;-) > Why does everything need to do Swisscom-bashing as a principle? it'snot swisscom bashing (ok, maybe a little bit): but the pricing we have to pay to swisscom is far away from good and bad. it seems that they took a pricelist from 1998 or so for this service... pfft... -steven
