I ran into this problem once a while ago. The customer needs to register the email account with a (payed) Swisscom account, i.e. an ADSL subscription or maybe even a usual phone line. Swisscom claims this to be the only way to verify a customer and to be able to block him or her in case of spamming or a virus problem.

Hello All
Even the bluewin support suggested I should ask here as this could lead to
a
quicker answer that to wait for them to find out...
Usualy our recommendation for customers having their email address hosted
@
$otherISP, is to ask the support of $otherISP how they enable SSL and
SMTP-
Auth so they can use 'their' server.
This worked fine for allmost all ISP.
BlueWin has also published instructions how to configure a mail client on: www.stopspam.ch
Now this stopped working for some of our customers. We directed them to
the
Bluewin Hotline so Bluewin could check with them what went wrong.
Bluewin directed them back to our customer service, pretending smtp-auth would not be supported on the Bluewin mailservers.
So I called Bluewin myself to check that statement... It was more or less confirmed. Bluewin apparently has added ip-range restrictions to smtpauth.bluewin.ch so it is not usable anymore from some ip-ranges (like ours and freesurf I was told).
Anyone here from bluewin tech to confirm this and explain why?
Mit freundlichen GrĂ¼ssen
Benoit Panizzon
